Message From the President
As President of SML, it is my privilege to work with such a talented group of individuals. The design and planning of each SML project, no matter how well forecasted, could not become a reality without the expertise and dedication of what I regard as the most talented group of professional carpenters, masons, painters, cabinet-makers and subtrades in Muskoka – true craftsmen working together to complete each project to the SML standard of excellence which our clients have come to expect.
President, SML Contracting Ltd.
Building custom homes and cottages on the lakes of Muskoka since 1995, SML Contracting Ltd. has become a trusted name for quality, craftsmanship and integrity in this desirable vacation and retirement area.
With hundreds of projects now completed, SML Contracting continues to grow and focus on making changes necessary to meet the challenges of the future ensuring SML will be strong and prosperous for generations to come.
Projects currently can be found in Port Carling, Huntsville, Bracebridge, Rosseau and Lake of Bays areas.
In 1978, Bruce began his career in the Custom Home Industry designing and building custom homes in the Caledon area of southern Ontario. After a number of successful years Bruce expanded his company to include a millwork corporation that serviced several large corporate restaurant chains across Canada. In 1994 after an opportunity for a lifestyle change, Bruce sold Hygrade Millwork Corporation and moved to Muskoka with his wife Lois and family. Rekindling his passion for design and building, Bruce started South Mary Lake Contracting (SML) in 1995 assisting his clients in fulfilling their dreams of enjoying their own luxury waterfront residence along the pristine shorelines of Muskoka.
VP, Project Manager
After a 25-year history as the owner/operator of Westcraft Construction Inc. and a reputation for building high end homes in Muskoka, Sandy and Bruce realized that their businesses would be stronger together. In 2010, a partnership was formed allowing Sandy to use his technical expertise and project management skills to prioritize quality and attention to detail while allowing Bruce to grow the business through sales and leadership. Born and raised in Huntsville, Sandy has a keen sense of topography, climate and forestry considerations that are specific to Muskoka, integrating them with the building science of each unique construction setting. Sandy’s formal training was completed in Vancouver, BC where he acquired his Inter-Provincial Trades Qualification in Carpentry.
Jay started with SML in 1998 and over the years has gained experience in all areas of the company, including a vast knowledge of completed projects and a keen sense of the SML ‘DNA’. As a licensed carpenter with many years of running projects and leading by example as a site foreman, Jay is now a part of the project management team and active in the design process. Jay has also spent time overseas working on construction projects in underdeveloped countries as a missionary/contractor. This work has been extremely challenging but also a rewarding part of our strong company culture of giving back.
Kyle Newman brings years of site and project management in high-end residential and ICI construction. Combined with his business and science background, Kyle brings a set of abilities unique to the construction industry. His ability to resolve problems and effectively communicate with all parties have proven to add value in the projects he manages. His commitment to integrity, passion for construction, and love of Muskoka have made him a perfect fit with the SML Team.
In 2013, SML Contracting expanded their extensive client service capabilities by creating their own Millwork division. From conceptual design through to complete installation, the skilled team of millwork specialists are led by accredited cabinet maker, Adrian Azzopardi.
Equipped with high-tech tools like a precise, large-scale CNC machine, and their own spray finishing booth, they’re frequently producing complete kitchens and vanities, interior doors, custom trim and furniture. You dream it; we can build it!

In October, 2016, Christine’s Place Pregnancy and Family Support Centre held their 5th annual gala event at the Mark O’Meara Golf Club. It was an amazing night – fun, meaningful, and entertaining. There was a delicious meal, entertainment by the Fisher Tones, a live auction led by Dave Hiscox as well as insights and highlights of the impactful work done by Christine’s Place in the community.
SML Contracting was one of the platinum sponsors, and along with one other donor underwrote the entire cost of the meal which significantly contributed to this fundraiser being their most successful ever.
As part of our commitment to give back to the community of Huntsville, SML Contracting supports local charities like Christine’s Place Pregnancy and Family Support Centre. We believe in empowering organizations like this to continue the work of providing aid to young women facing challenging times.

SML Contracting was happy to help out The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation and their new Men’s Shelter.
“As a contractor we build buildings every day,” said Sandy Jennings, an owner with SML. “But this one is special to our hearts. We love getting behind community projects … without the community involvement in a project like this, it’s financially difficult and puts the burden on the tax dollar, municipal, provincial and federal money. We as corporate citizens all have a responsibility, whatever state we’re in, to do our little bit. We’re not all in the same position in life and there’s always someone a little less fortunate than yourself so you have to have a love and a heart for others and that’s what Heather Berg (Foundation President) has, she’s an amazing woman.”
